Congresswoman Houchin Attends the Dedication Ceremony of the Ninth District’s 20th Baby Box in Sunman

March 27, 2023

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, March 26, Congresswoman Erin Houchin (R-Ind.-09) attended the dedication ceremony of a new Safe Haven Baby Box in Sunman, Indiana. A baby box allows the opportunity for mothers to surrender their newborns safely and anonymously. The new site will bring the total number of baby boxes in the ninth district to 20 baby boxes.

“Sunday was a very special day with the dedication of a new baby box in the ninth district. I have worked hard to make this a reality during my time in the statehouse and have seen success story after success story since its inception in 2017. 21 babies have been saved in Indiana because we worked together to make days like these possible.

“In fact, Indiana has proven to be an example of the power of these baby boxes for other states, with representatives from Ohio and Florida reaching out to model our legislation. I was proud to attend the unveiling of a new resource for mothers to give their babies another chance at life,” said Congresswoman Houchin.

In the Indiana State Senate, Congresswoman Houchin co-authored legislation (S.B. 123) in 2018 and supported a resolution in 2020 to expand the use of baby boxes in Indiana. The Sunman location would mark Indiana’s 97th Safe Haven Baby Box out of a total of 137 in the country.
