Congresswoman Houchin Supports House Passage of the Parents Bill of Rights
Passed bill includes Rep. Houchin’s amendment to improve child literacy in the third grade
WASHINGTON –Today, Congresswoman Erin Houchin (R-Ind.-09), a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, voted to pass the Parents Bill of Rights Act to improve transparency inside the classroom. The bill included her amendment to require parents to be notified when their student is not reading at a grade-level proficiency by the end of the third grade.
The vote follows Congresswoman Houchin’s management of the rule debate on the Parents Bill of Rights for the first time, including opening remarks on the need to pass the bill yesterday.
“Today, House Republicans responded to the pleas of parents across America by passing the Parents Bill of Rights. We fought for and delivered a bill to put parents, not bureaucrats, in charge of their children’s education by ensuring access to information. I will always support our parents and students fundamental rights inside of the classroom, and will continue to help improve child literacy every opportunity I can,” said Congresswoman Houchin.
The Parents Bill of Rights Act, which Congresswoman Houchin is an original cosponsor of, focuses on five principles, including that parents have the right to know what their children are being taught; that parents have the right to be heard; that parents have the right to see the school budget; that parents have the right to protect their children’s privacy; and that parents have a right to keep their children safe.
