It has been a busy year so far in the House Financial Services Committee. From moving legislation to establish guidelines for stablecoins, to working toward a nationwide data privacy standard, the agenda set forth under committee Chairman Patrick McHenry has been aggressive and successful. As we promised at the beginning of my first term, our team is working hard to ensure Hoosier priorities are protected in Congress – and that starts with keeping you informed.
WASHINGTON — Republicans in Washington are pushing to make sure that schools don’t become shelters for those who enter the country illegally.
Rep. Erin Houchin (R-IN-9th) is leading the charge as she brought HR 3941 to the House floor for debate on Tuesday. The bill would make it illegal for illegal immigrants and their children to be housed at schools and colleges.
Houchin said any pushes to use schools as shelters further perpetrate a “failure” on President Biden’s part when it comes to the problems at the southern border.
When Indiana Rep. Erin Houchin’s children were small, Houchin and her husband Dustin posted a one-word admonition on their front door that could be seen just as one exited: “Contend.”
“One of the things we wanted to teach the children was to contend, to go out and be bold, to pursue causes greater than yourself, and to find meaning in hard work. That is why my husband put up a little sign with the word ‘contend.’”
Though I enjoy being your representative in Congress, I do like Washington County much better than Washington, D.C. I prefer the beauty of our farmland, the pace of the lifestyle, and the work ethic born of a relationship with the land. I’m proud to live in and represent an agricultural district, and I always keep that in mind when I work in D.C.
Growing up in the small town that I still call home, I knew early on the challenges my neighbors and friends faced, and what was needed to ensure their success.
