Rep. Erin Houchin Statement on House Passage of the SAVE America Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE America Act by a vote of 218–213. The legislation strengthens election integrity by requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and a valid photo ID to cast a ballot. Representative Erin Houchin (IN-9) is a cosponsor of the bill.
The SAVE America Act builds on prior House efforts to safeguard federal elections and restore public confidence in the voting process. Federal law already prohibits noncitizens from voting, but enforcement gaps have allowed unlawful registrations to occur in multiple states. The legislation gives states stronger tools to maintain accurate voter rolls and prevent foreign interference.
“The right to vote is one of the most sacred rights we have as Americans, and protecting it is not partisan,” said Houchin. “The SAVE America Act ensures that only American citizens are voting in American elections. Requiring proof of citizenship and voter ID strengthens trust in our system and ensures that our elections are fair and secure.”
Public polling consistently shows strong bipartisan support for voter identification requirements.
The SAVE America Act now heads to the Senate for consideration.
