Government Shutdown Resources
As of 12:01 a.m. on October 1, federal government funding has lapsed for many operations. I supported a Continuing Resolution passed by the House that would have extended current funding until November 21, 2025, but unfortunately Senate Democrats blocked the proposal, forcing a shutdown.
Even during a shutdown, my office remains open and ready to serve the people of Indiana’s 9th District. While many federal agencies will experience slower response times and reduced staffing, my team can still submit casework requests and advocate on your behalf. If you need help with a federal agency, you can submit a request on my website here.
Many essential services will continue, including:
- Social Security payments, including SSI
- Medicare and Medicaid benefits
- VA medical care and benefits (although some regional offices may be closed)
- SNAP benefits (though a prolonged shutdown could cause disruptions)
- Disability payments
- Mail delivery
- Federal law enforcement and military operations
- Air travel
- Student aid such as Pell Grants and Federal Direct Student Loans
Some services will be halted, delayed, or disrupted:
- FEMA disaster relief programs
- WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) nutrition assistance
- Federal workers in “non-essential” roles will be furloughed without pay
- National parks and museums will close or run with limited staff
- Small Business Administration loan processing will be delayed
For the latest details by agency, visit the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) website or your agency’s .gov page.
Resources for Federal Employees:
As agencies shut down, federal employees will either be furloughed, or in some cases required to work without pay. Under federal law, employees are entitled to back pay upon the government reopening.
My office remains available to answer your questions and provide assistance. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at Houchin.house.gov, by calling our Washington office at (202) 225-5315, or our district office in Salem at (812) 288-3999.
